I was struck by how tidy and orderly the area was and security guards were stationed on every block. It felt worlds apart from the chaotic traffic scenes I encountered on the rest of the trip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The next morning, I headed across the city to visit an underwater photography store. That turned into a day of mall-hopping, including a stop at the enormous Mall of Asia. I made the rookie mistake of stepping into Ikea \u2014 and then spent 45 minutes just trying to find the exit. (Yes, I did consider sending out a distress call to my husband at one point!).<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/You-will-not.-1-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4123 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/You-will-not.-1-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/You-will-not.-1-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/You-will-not.-1-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/You-will-not.-1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Off to Anilao: Dive, Eat, Sleep, Repeat<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From Manila, I was transferred to&nbsp;<em>Crystal Blue Resort<\/em>&nbsp;in Anilao for an intensive 10-day macro photography workshop \u2014 and I do mean&nbsp;<em>intensive<\/em>. We started each day with a photo review session where we submitted two shots for critique, followed by a short lecture on that day\u2019s macro theme (like storytelling, composition, or lighting). Then it was two dives, lunch, another workshop session, and two more dives before dinner. I was shattered by the end of each day \u2014 and barely had time to flick through my memory card before my eyes shut.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\" style=\"grid-template-columns:39% auto\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4117 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/2.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>A New Obsession: Blackwater Diving<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>One optional extra was&nbsp;<em>blackwater diving<\/em>&nbsp;\u2014 and I was hooked from my very first night. Drifting in open water at night under a downline, we encountered larval fish, juvenile mantis shrimp, pelagic squid, octopus, comb jellies, and all kinds of bizarre, alien-like plankton. It\u2019s an entirely different world. If you ever get the chance to try blackwater diving \u2014 do it! I ended up booking four nights in total and would have done more if I could.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4118 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/1.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Learning from the Best<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On the final day of the workshop, we each submitted ten photos for an in-house competition. I was absolutely stoked to be awarded 2nd place \u2014 especially considering the incredible talent in the group. Huge thanks to the trip leaders Nirupam Nigam &amp; Mike Chiado, and to Mike Bartick from Crystal Blue \u2014 I learned more in those ten days than in two years of shooting underwater.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"1080\" height=\"1350\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4119 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/4.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 1080px) 100vw, 1080px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>Cultural Connection in Pinamalayan<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After saying farewell to my fellow workshop divers, I was transferred to Batangas Port where I met up with Ameil \u2014 a diver I\u2019d first met when he joined our club back home in New Zealand. From there, we caught a ferry to Mindoro and were picked up by his friend L.A., who drove us to Ameil\u2019s hometown of Pinamalayan.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I spent the next couple of days being welcomed like family. I met Ameil\u2019s parents, ate incredible Filipino food, and joined him for a couple of dives at COVE \u2014 his freediving and scuba business. It was hands-down the most authentic and heartfelt part of the trip. The hospitality I experienced in Pinamalayan is something I\u2019ll never forget.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"wp-block-media-text alignwide has-media-on-the-right is-stacked-on-mobile\"><figure class=\"wp-block-media-text__media\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"819\" height=\"1024\" src=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5-819x1024.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-4120 size-full\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5-819x1024.png 819w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5-240x300.png 240w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5-768x960.png 768w, https:\/\/www.diveski.co.nz\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/06\/5.png 1080w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 819px) 100vw, 819px\" \/><\/figure><div class=\"wp-block-media-text__content\">\n<p><strong>One Last Dive Stop: Puerto Galera<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wrapped up the adventure in Puerto Galera \u2014 a true&nbsp;<em>macro heaven<\/em>. Although I was there to take photos, my favourite dive of the whole trip was actually&nbsp;<em>The Canyons<\/em>. It was such a visual overload that I barely took a single shot \u2014 I just wanted to soak it all in. We squeezed in a few days of diving in Puerto Galera, but it definitely wasn\u2019t enough.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Final Thoughts<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This was more than just a photography trip \u2014 it was a deep dive into culture, connection, and creativity underwater. I\u2019m incredibly grateful to everyone who made it so special, from the workshop leaders and dive staff to my Filipino hosts. If you ever get the chance to dive the Philippines \u2014 especially Anilao and Puerto Galera \u2014 don\u2019t hesitate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And if macro\u2019s your thing?
