Discover the biodiversity of Te Whanganui-a-Tara \/ Wellington Harbour.<\/strong>

A BioBlitz is an intense short-term event where scientists, volunteers, and community members work together to identify as many species (plants, animals, fungi) as possible within a specific local area. It acts as a rapid assessment of biodiversity to engage the public with nature and provide valuable, real-time data for conservation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our goal is to document as many marine, intertidal, and coastal species as possible – especially the marine life in Wellington\u2019s amazing underwater forests.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

📍 Location – Kau Bay Point<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Divers will be familiar with this site –\u00a0popular for diver training & fun dives. With the artificial tire reef &\u00a0seahorses\u00a0it is one of our\u00a0best night dive sites. Kau Bay Point was also the site used for the kina removal & seaweed restoration projects.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

🧜‍♀️ Who Can Get Involved?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Everyone that loves the ocean and is excited to learn what species call Wellington Harbour home. Divers & Freedivers can observe species that live underwater. Others can explore the beaches & rockpools while\u00a0observing\u00a0local seabirds.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

📅 When is the Bioblitz happening?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Saturday 21st of March – 10am
Launching with our first survey and BBQ this weekend and continues through to the 27th of April and the 2026 City Nature Challenge.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

We encourage participants to visit Kau Bay and conduct their own surveys at different times of the day & night, with different weather conditions throughout the month so we can get a comphrehensive list of the species in the site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

📸 What do I need to do?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Take photos & upload these to iNaturalist.
Aim for clear, well-lit, close up photos of a single species. Capture multiple angles to show distinguishing features. Ensure the subject is centered and in focus.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

Sign up with iNaturalist &\u00a0upload your photos using Kau Bay Point as the location. All observations at this location during the bioblitz will be collated\u00a0as a single project so we can record the range of species seen.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
