Poor Knights 2016

The Poor Knights Islands are rated in the top 10 dive sites world wide and they definitely live up to their reputation. So it was with great excitement that a group of club divers headed north for a 4 day liveaboard adventure with Oceanblue.

Our dive gear was set up and ready to go as we headed out to the islands for our first dive of the trip. You know the diving is going to be fantastic when the snapper and trevally are hanging out under the boat and you can see the bottom 20m below.
Jumping in at the Gardens was a fantastic shakeout dive as everyone got their first dive out of the way and met a range of fish that we just don’t see in Wellington.

We saw long and short tailed rays, schools of kingis, blue mao mao and demoiselles, yellow, grey and mosaic eels, sandager’s wrasse, john dory, long finned boarfish, black angel fish and so much more. Needless to say the marine ID books got a great workout over the trip.

Katherine & Nathan learnt some new skills as they completed the PADI Advanced Open Water, Drysuit and Enriched Air Courses.

& a big thanks to Brian who assisted the skipper whilst anchoring and cruised the reef taking photos with the boys.

I would love to say that I worked hard all week but the skipper Kevin runs a tight ship and cooks a fantastic curry. So with some great company, lots of good food and some amazing dives I didn’t have to do a lot to have a successful trip away.

So of course I would love to head back up again later in the year, early September, and am planning a 3 day trip at the Knights followed by 2 days with Northland Dive on the Canterbury Wreck and Cape Brett. If you would like to join in for this one please let me know.
