Dive HQ’s Monthly Review – June

We’ve enjoyed another busy month with our first international dive trip in 4 years to the Philippines. Local Wellington diving conditions were fantastic, we certified some new PADI Advanced & Open Water Divers and Paddy ran a couple of recreational PADI Sidemount Diver courses.

With 5 dives a week, we are Wellington’s most active dive club with 5 dives on Thursday evenings and weekends. Please book a day or two prior to the dives.

Tubbataha Reefs Natural Park – Philippines

Our club trip to Tubbataha finally went ahead in June. Liveaboard diving enabled us to explore the reefs, complete 20+ dives and still having time to eat, sleep and meet other divers. The reefs were covered corals, anemones and large barrel sponges. There was plenty to see including turtles, sharks, colourful fish species, morays, a manta ray and for some divers even a whaleshark.

Scallop Season 2023

With the scallop season opening on July 15th we wanted to remind you of the recreational fishing rules & regulations. The Central Fishing Area has a daily bag limit of 20 scallops and a minimum of 100mm. Scallops must be counted and measured underwater and cannot be shucked below the mean high watermark.
We recommend gloves, catch bag and a measuring device for your dives.

PADI Sidemount Diver Specialty Course

Sidemount diving has two cylinders attached on either side of the BCD. This profile is perfect for wreck diving and allows greater access to tank valves for gas management. A large part of the training is getting to know your gear and making adjustments so that the cylinders are aligned for better trim.
The course includes an equipment night, a pool session and 3 sea dives.
