Scuba diving opens up an incredible underwater world, and there’s no better place to learn than Wellington. With dramatic coastlines, thriving marine reserves, and some of New Zealand’s best shore diving, Wellington offers amazing diving right on our doorstep.
If you’re new to diving, one of the first questions you probably have is, “How do I get my scuba diving licence?” The good news is that it’s easier than you might think.
In this guide, we’ll explain what scuba diving is, how certification works, and how you can become a certified diver with Dive HQ Wellington
What Is Scuba Diving?
Scuba diving is the activity of exploring underwater using specialised equipment that allows you to breathe beneath the surface. Unlike snorkelling, scuba diving lets you stay underwater for much longer and explore deeper environments safely.
Modern scuba equipment is designed to be comfortable, reliable, and easy to use. During your training, our experienced instructors will teach you everything you need to know, from using your equipment to communicating underwater and diving safely.
Whether you’re interested in exploring Wellington’s reefs, spotting octopus and crayfish, or diving famous local sites like the Taputeranga Marine Reserve, scuba diving offers a completely new way to experience the ocean.
Do You Need a Scuba Diving Licence?

People often refer to it as a scuba diving licence, or ‘getting my PADI’ but what you’ll actually earn is a PADI scuba diving certification.
PADI (Professional Association of Diving Instructors) is the world’s largest and most recognised scuba diving training organisation. Rather than issuing licences, PADI offers internationally recognised certifications that allow you to dive around the world.
The first certification most people complete is the PADI Open Water Diver course. As your confidence and experience grow, you can continue your diving journey with courses such as:
- Advanced Open Water Diver
- Rescue Diver
- Divemaster
- Instructor
- A wide range of specialty courses including Deep Diver, Wreck Diver, Underwater Navigation, Peak Performance Buoyancy, and many more.
How Do You Get Your PADI Open Water Certification?
At Dive HQ Wellington, the PADI Open Water Diver course includes:
- Online theory completed at your own pace
- Pool training sessions where you’ll learn and practise essential dive skills
- Four open water dives in Wellington’s ocean with one of our experienced instructors
- Safety procedures, dive planning, buoyancy control, and underwater communication
During your ocean dives, you’ll put everything you’ve learnt in the pool into practice while exploring Wellington’s incredible underwater environment.
Once you’ve successfully completed the course, you’ll receive your internationally recognised PADI Open Water Diver certification, allowing you to dive almost anywhere in the world.

How Long Does It Take?

At Dive HQ Wellington, our Open Water course is typically completed over two weeks.
The course includes:
- Up to four pool sessions held on Monday and Wednesday evenings
- Online theory that you complete before your open water dives
- Two full days of ocean diving on the final weekend
Completing the theory beforehand means you’ll arrive at your sea dives with a solid understanding of the concepts, and our instructors are always available to answer any questions along the way. We also offer private courses and weekend only courses so we can cater to everyone.
Is Scuba Diving Difficult to Learn?
Not at all.
The PADI Open Water course is specifically designed for beginners, even if you’ve never tried scuba diving before.
Our instructors guide you through each step at a comfortable pace, helping you build confidence before heading into open water.
You don’t need to be an elite swimmer, but you should be comfortable in the water and able to swim. If you’re unsure, our team is always happy to chat about whether the course is right for you.
What Equipment Will You Need?

During your course you’ll learn to use all the essential scuba equipment, including:
- Mask and snorkel
- Fins
- Wetsuit
- Buoyancy Control Device (BCD)
- Scuba Tank
- Regulator
- Dive computer
- Weight system
Dive HQ Wellington provides all the scuba equipment you’ll need during your course.
We do recommend purchasing your own mask and snorkel if possible, as a properly fitted mask makes a huge difference to your comfort underwater. Our team can help you choose equipment that fits correctly, and we regularly have great package deals available for new divers.
